MARCH & ICED Presents: 15 million preterm babies – will better care create more disabled survivors? The aim is to engage the paediatric, obstetric and public health communities to strengthen programmes to prevent and manage these conditions, and to improve services for those with impairment. One of the big messages is that neonatal conditions account for almost 10% of the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) and that in low income countries this is still dominated by preventable mortality, but in middle income countries with increasing access to Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU), there are also an increasing number of disabled survivors. The probability of developing a disability is lower in higher income settings and heavily concentrated in extremely preterm infants – suggesting that steps can be taken in low income settings to improve outcomes for infants. A critical issue is to improve the data and especially the disability follow up data in parallel with scaling up NICUs. lshtm.ac.uk/newsevents/events/2014/02/15-million-preterm-babies-will-better-care-create-more-disabled-survivors
