MARION COUNTY, Fla. (Sept.19, 2014) – At 9:36 p.m. on Friday, dispatchers at the Marion County Public Safety Communications Center received multiple calls reporting a fire at 2488 SE 58th Ave., Ocala. Flames and smoke were showing through a section of the approximately 35,000 square foot plazas roof when MCFR Engine 28 arrived at 9:44 p.m. The plaza houses Dollar General, Express Cleaners of Ocala, C & D Coliseum and two other vacant units. The fire appears to have originated between the Dollar General and Express Cleaners of Ocala due to the re-ignition of hot tar used in roof-work being conducted on the building. Approximately 25 firefighters and ten units responded to the incident. They had the fire under control within half an hour at 10:05 p.m. There were no injuries and, despite damage to the roof and from smoke, MCFR officials predicted the businesses would be able to reopen Saturday morning.
