MARK SAVITT REVIEWS ROCOCO ROUGE Company XIV Conceived, Directed and Choreographed by Austin McCormick Once more with Rococo Rouge, Company XIV presents the most fabulous show in town. When you go downstairs at their new digs on 428 Lafayette St., you are totally immersed in an extravagant, opulent, and decadent world of pleasure. The first act with its opera arias and bright lighting, and courtly dances most closely approaches the Baroque sensibility of the Sun King, Louis XIV and the later more delicate Rococo period. A dance to the moon in a suspended hoop featuring Allison Ulrich and Steven Trumon Gray along with a large floor wheel dance by Courtney Giannone show us what Cirque du Soleil would be like if they had stylish taste and were any good. The second act is sultrier with darker more dramatic lighting, songs by Britney Spears, Lorde, and Piaf, and apache and tango dancing. The third act features serious(lovely Katrina Cunningham) and comic(talented Davon Rainey) strip tease, pole dancing, and can-can by the full company. Hostess Shelly Watson purrs and growls in a Mae West fashion. Guitarist Rob Mastrianni often accompanies great singer Brett Umlauf. Company regular Laura Careless is back with her excellent dancing and wild mixture of innocence and depravity. This has long been my favorite company and they keep getting better and better.
