MARKS BEST MOVIE SONGS EVER (1955-99) COUNTDOWN ... NO. 86 CALL ME–BLONDIE (#1, 1980, American Gigolo) The second of two songs in this countdown from the Richard Gere movie American Gigolo, the band Blondie hit No. 1 in April 1980 and spent six solid weeks at the top. The song became the biggest hit of the year and the bands second No. 1 hit in less than a year. But Blondie was not the first choice by producer Giorgio Moroder (ironically back at No. 87 co-writing and producing Berlins 1986 chart-topper Take My Breath Away) to perform the song for the movie. That was Fleetwood Macs Stevie Nicks, who was willing to do it except she had just signed a solo deal with Modern Records and they frowned upon her doing the project that didnt have their approval. So Moroder turned to Blondies two main songwriters, lead singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein. They were more than on board with the project and it was Harry who collaborated with Moroder on writing Call Me. Because Moroder had already composed the music, Harry said it only took a couple of hours to write the lyrics and melody, which included both the Italian (Amore, chiamami) and French (Appelle-moi, mon chéri) translations of Call me, my darling in the bridge of this song. This movies theme became the biggest of Blondies four No. 1 hits and was also No. 1 in the UK and in Canada. The other song from the movie in this countdown, the James Last Bands The Seduction, was back at No. 288. Thoughts, memories? Enjoy!
