MARKS BEST SONGS OF 1975 COUNTDOWN ... NO. 241 LIVING A LITTLE, LAUGHING A LITTLE–THE SPINNERS (#37, July; #7, R&B) The first of two songs in this countdown by Detroits own Spinners, who have gone by this name ever since forming in the early 1960s, but have had to change the name twice, first to the Motown Spinners (when they were at Motown), then to the Detroit Spinners when they moved to Atlantic Records in 1972. All this happens because there is a British folk group that made it first in England called The Spinners. Nonetheless, our U.S. Spinners scored this Top 40 hit in the summer of 1975 as the third Top 40 hit from the album New And Improved. This one was co-written by the successful pair of Thom Bell and Linda Creed, who also wrote Ghetto Child and the 1976 No. 2 smash The Rubberband Man for the group. In Living A Little, Laughing A Little, Bell and Creed wrote this song about a sad clown who deals with all kinds of hurt and existing in the world we all live in. And its tough for a clown. Thoughts, memories? Enjoy!
