MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - In the last few weeks, thousands of police officers have attended the funerals of NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, who were shot to death in their patrol car last month. You start thinking, how can I support that department, and that officer and that officers family? said Deputy Sheriff Joseph Whitehead with the Berkeley County Sheriffs Department. To show their support, four members of the honor guard at the Berkeley County Sheriffs Department traveled to New York City for Ramos funeral, and said the experience was rewarding. We figured that we could go down there and show the NYPD, hey, we support you from West Virginia, Whitehead said. Were going to be a representation from Berkeley County and the state of West Virginia, and also show the family that even though they lost a loved one in the line of duty, they gained family members in the thousands of police officers across the country. It was extremely humbling, said Deputy Sheriff Chris Cochran. There were more civilians out there that supported law enforcement than we actually thought. Both deputies said the mood was bittersweet in New York. We were there honoring an officer that was killed in the line of duty, but I also think it was a celebration of his life, Whitehead said. Weve been to numerous funerals as the honor guard team, to where even different countries come, Cochran added. To stand there hand-in-hand, and to stand behind not only the family but the NYPD, was absolutely wonderful.
