MARVELOUS MOVIE MONDAYS!! guest curator: Karen Yasinsky theme: The uncanny and possibly eldritch in silent film Hi! Film exists in the present tense and silent film is rife with powerful ghosts. I fall in love with these spirits from the past in a scary and real way. They are the stuff of dreams - the memory of a great silent film could confuse you. If they werent called silent films you may forget that no one actually spoke. The communication is in the gesture, movement and rhythm. Its like riding a horse. I could go on more but I havent slept much. So, my first film is Sir Arnes Treasure by Mauritz Stiller. Two of my most memorable and uncanny scenes occur in relation to death in this film. Ghosts of ghosts I suppose. The two scenes have a quality of a great painting. They lock in some quivering aspect of time that exists in the viewers emotional experience - moving outside of the narrative and right into you. The image can stay with you like a great painting. Look at hands, mouths, bonnets and a procession on ice. Get into bed and take the time to watch the whole film. Please. youtube/watch?v=8RaMxINXOCw
