MASHABA (SOUTH AFRICA) Mashaba is the only local coach among the four men. He will certainly want to beef up his CV but for him it won’t be about ego. His main objective will be to make the country proud in the team once again. Since taking over last year, he’s fulfilled the role of a fatherly figure. He has given the players the knowledge in terms of what they need to do. He steps on them hard when they head in the wrong direction but at the same time affords players praise when they are doing well. Mashaba’s key performance factor is that the team respects him as a leader and coach. Mashaba’s tactical approach is based on a simple principle: players working exceptionally hard to regain ball possession immediately after they lose it. Bafana Bafana have to do that as they are playing against group opponents who are lethal on the counter-attack. At 64, Mashaba is the oldest of the four coaches but age is nothing in football. As long as you are up to date with modern trends you can continue to succeed. Mashaba has made the players believe in their own abilities and the side is on a 10-match unbeaten streak. Even though the bar has been raised, Mashaba must stress to his men to continue the process and take one game at a time. Tournament football is not about thinking too far ahead.
