MASS. FIREFIGHTERS LENDING HAND OUT WEST 2 from Lanesborough Twenty two men and women firefighters from Massachusetts will spend the next roughly two weeks fighting wildfires in Montana, Alaska and West Virginia. The weather in the eastern United States has been wet enough this summer to allow personnel to travel to the hot, dry western United States where there are 34 uncontained fires, according to the Department of Conservation and Recreation. The firefighters heading west hail from the DCR Bureau of Forest Fire Control and Forestry, and municipal departments. The firefighters deployed on Wednesday and will be there for two weeks, according to DCR. “We are grateful to these firefighters who are bringing their expertise and commitment to assist our partners in other states,” said Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rick Sullivan in a statement. “It is our hope that these added resources help to protect the public and the environment in Alaska, Montana and West Virginia and we look forward to our crew’s safe return.” The DCR firefighters are: Shawn Bush, of Oakham; Aaron Whiddon, of Plymouth; Jonathan Hallinan, of Peabody; Jesse Hanecak, of Whately; Benjamin Jennell, of West Newbury; Brian Mayer, of Groton; Millard Ring, of Rockport; Sam Schilling, of Northampton; and Eric Rogers, of Holyoke.
