MATCH REPORT: Liverpool Ladies 2 - 0 Everton Ladies (Development Squad) Last Sunday Liverpool Ladies Development Squad got their 2014/15 season off to a winning start, beating reigning champions Sunderland Ladies 3-0 with Hannah Dale opening the scoring and Mollie Green netting a brace. Earlier tonight Liverpool continued their good start to the season as they convincingly beat Everton Ladies 2-0, to leap to second place in the league. New manager Matty Campbell made 4 changes to the starting line up, with Danielle Gibbons coming in for Rachel Darbyshire in goal and Katie Zelem, Beth Donoghue and Ashley Hodson starting over Megan Alexander, Vicky Rumsey and Jess Davenport. Olivia Wild and Emilie Revitt were at right-back and left-back respectively, with the centre-back pairing of Ellie Stewart and captain Shannon Beckwith. Hannah Dale partnered Katie Zelem in midfield with an attacking interchanging front four of Claudia Walker, Mollie Green, Ashley Hodson and Beth Donoghue. From the opening whistle Liverpool were on the attack, Beth Donoghue with some nice footwork on the right wing, exchanging a quick one-two with Ashley Hodson on the edge of the area and swinging a cross into the waiting Claudia Walker but the Everton keeper was first to the ball. Liverpool development squad continually utilise the attacking prowess of their full-backs and tonight was no different, with both Emilie Revitt and Olivia Wild pressing high up the pitch. Wild sent Hodson chasing an early through ball, the defender cleared for a Liverpool throw by the corner flag. Wild then set up Mollie Green on the corner of the 18-yard box, Green scored twice at the weekend but this strike went narrowly wide. The reds quickly began to dominate the run of play, Hannah Dale winning every ball in the centre of midfield and trying a blistering drive from 30 yards out that had the keeper beaten but was just inches past the post. Minutes later an excellent sliding challenge from Dale set up an attack that saw both Donoghue and Green with efforts blocked. The attacking quartet of Claudia Walker, Beth Donoghue, Mollie Green and Ashley Hodson worked well. Hodson starting up front, with Walker to the left, Green just behind her and Donoghue on the right, throughout the 90 minutes the front 3 interchanged and linked well together, dazzling the blues defence and making the attack tough to mark. Liverpool crept closer and closer to opening the scoring, Wild picking out the run of Hodson on the left wing. Hodson brilliantly controlled the ball and sent a low cross in towards Walker but her strike was blocked. The reds defence was tested on a couple of occasions, the first strike on target was straight at goalkeeper Danielle Gibbons from point-blank range but the reds stopper held onto the ball well. Shortly after a Katie Zelem free kick hit the Everton wall Claudia Walker found herself in space just outside of the box, bursting forward past a couple of blue shirts and shooting - the first hit blocked by the keeper and coming back out to Walker who expertly controlled and put the ball in the back of the net from a tight angle to give Liverpool a well deserved lead. During the first part of the second half, Everton began to press Liverpool more in an attempt to limit their time on the ball. Hannah Dale is a player who impresses more and more each time she plays a full 90 minutes, the midfielders set piece deliveries throughout the game were brilliant. One early corner in the second 45 minutes was destined for Ellie Stewart, headed away only as far as Olivia Wild who skipped around a couple of blue defenders and shot from distance. As Everton started to pull themselves back into the game, Hannah Dale won a free kick in the centre circle kick starting a move which led to the second goal. Mollie Green broke down the left wing, cutting in by the touchline and cutting the ball back to Ashley Hodson who finished well past the keeper for her first goal of the season. 2-0 up, Liverpool were now in complete control of the game. Shannon Beckwith and Ellie Stewart found themselves faced with a revived Everton attack yet never looked panicked and dealt with ease everything that came their way. Beckwith tussling with the Everton no.9 and coming out on top a number of times and Stewart confidently tackling and bringing the ball out of defence. Danielle Gibbons was also reliable when called upon, despite have relatively little to do, calling well when a free kick swung its way dangerously into the box and punching clear. Liverpool made 3 substitutions in the second half, Megan Alexander fresh from her loan spell in WSL2 with Oxford United replacing Emilie Revitt and immediately sending a good cross in towards Hodson. Vicky Rumsey came on for Mollie Green, slotting in well alongside Dale in midfield to help see out the win while Jess Davenport was also a late change for Beth Donoghue. Overall a strong performance from Liverpools development squad, with a number of players continuing the good form from their run at the end of last season and those that have featured for the first team clearly having benefited from the experience. This win puts Liverpool 2nd in the table after 2 games played, having scored 5 goals and conceded none.
