MATCH REPORT: The Calor League Premier Division BANBURY UNITED 2 Redditch United 0 (Courtesy of David Shadbolt, Programme Editor) Banbury moved up to sixth place in the League table with a deserved 2-0 win over an in-form Redditch United side at the Spencer Stadium. There was a place in the starting line-up for the returning Albi Skendi, playing in a central midfield role and also a return from injury for central defender Tom Ryan. Banbury began the game brightly and there were early chances for Dominic Lawless who lobbed Sam Hornby in the Redditch goal, only to see the ball run across the six yard box and for Kynan Isaac whose effort was well saved by the custodian. Banbury continued to have the better of the game and went close to taking the lead on 35 minutes when a cross from the left by John Mbamarah found Adeyinka Talabi in a central position just outside the penalty area. The United striker did well to make room for a shot, his effort was parried away by Hornby but only as far as Lawless whose goalbound shot was blocked by a defender on the line and then scrambled clear. However, Banbury got their reward for their first half display with a deserved goal in the last minute of the half. Skendi fed Talabi down the right who then took the ball inside the penalty area before striking a fierce drive under Hornby from a narrow angle. Banbury had a scare just four minutes into the second half when a Redditch corner from the right found its way through to Calum Flanagan at the far post but his shot from a narrow angle was saved by United goalkeeper Leigh Bedwell. However, just four minutes later and Banbury were 2-0 up. Skendi went on a surging run from the right side of midfield to the edge of the Redditch penalty area where he dinked the ball over the visiting defence to Anderson Pinto coming in on the left whose goalwards header was helped on by Talabi to Lawless in the centre who had a simple tap in from under the crossbar. Redditch had their moments in the final quarter of the game. On 70 minutes Ashley Sammons did well to create a shooting opportunity on the edge of the area but the good chance went begging as his curling shot went just over. Redditch came closest of all to scoring in the game all afternoon in the final minute when a Sammons free-kick from a central position just outside the penalty area struck the underside of the crossbar before the ball came down and was headed away by Tom Ryan. Banbury manager Edwin Stein will be especially delighted that his defence kept a clean sheet in the League for the first time since opening day. The three points moves the Puritans up to sixth place.
