MATCH SUMMARIES October 5, 2013 Elite League Cardiff Devils 1 Belfast Giants 4 Giants won for the second time this season in Wales to pile further gloom on Devils disappointing start to the season, especially at home, where they are now 0 and 5. The opening exchanges saw both sides go close on a number of occasions but it was the visitors who took the lead with a strike at 9.46 from Kevin Saurette. Just as it seemed that goal would split the teams at the first break Devils tied it up with 46 seconds remaining as Mac Faulkner fired home. The second period saw Giants the sharper in front of goal as they built up a two-goal lead. The go-ahead counter came from Jeff Szwez at 22.57 and then on a 5 on 3 powerplay Robby Sandrock shot past Dan LaCosta for 3-1 at 28.23. That’s the way it remained right up until the dying embers of the contest and with LaCosta having been pulled for the extra skater it was Calvin Elfring who scored shorthanded into the empty net at 58.53 to end the scoring and give Paul Adey’s Giants an impressive road victory. Period Scores: 1-1, 0-2, 0-1 Penalty Mins: Car 2+6+6=14, Bel 10+6+6=22 Powerplay: Car 0/8, Bel 1/4 Shots On: Dan LaCosta 9+10+7=26 + 1 ENG, Stephen Murphy 11+11+8=30 Referee: Dean Smith Hull Stingrays 1 Dundee Stars 2 An explosive encounter saw Stars remain in pole position in the league standings after edging this one by the odd goal in three while a third period melee saw no fewer than four players ejected. Stars led thanks to a goal by Jerry Pollastrone after 11.08 and had extended that advantage thanks to a further counter by Brock McPherson at 22.52 to go into period three 2-0 to the good. An early powerplay reply for Stingrays by ace marksman Jereme Tendler at 42.54 set up a great third period and despite a final shot count of 56 to 37 in Stingrays favour, goaltender Dan Bakala was again in imperious form between the visitors pipes and there was to be no further way through for Sylvain Cloutier’s men. Frustrations had clearly set in and at 54.55 it all boiled over, leaving Stars’ Nico Sacchetti ejected on a 5 plus game for boarding and teammate Pollastrone a 2+2+game for leaving the bench, while Stingrays had Derek Campbell ejected on a match penalty for excessive roughness and Jason Silverthorn a game for third man in. Period Scores: 0-1, 0-1, 1-0 Penalty Mins: Hul 8+0+57=65, Dun 6+4+59=69 Powerplay: Hul 1/7, Dun 0/5 Shots On: Ben Bowns 15+12+10=37, Dan Bakala 19+15+22=56 Referee: Michael Hicks Nottingham Panthers 4 Braehead Clan 2 Panthers fine start to the league season continued as they won their fifth game from six but were made to struggle against a battling Clan outfit, who will perhaps feel a little hard done by, as Ryan Finnerty’s men outshot their hosts, with the third period count of 17 to 6 providing scant reward for their efforts. A good even opening period with chances at both ends – and some late scoring. Panthers hit the front with a powerplay goal from David Clarke at 16.00 but with their own man-advantage Clan levelled thanks to Nathan Moon at 18.48. Period two saw a similar pattern to the first. Always tight, always interesting and no way of predicting where this game was going. A burst of late scoring again saw firstly Bob Wren fire Panthers 2-1 in front at 36.50, Robert Lachowicz extend the advantage at 38.21 but Scott Aarssen pull one back for Clan on the powerplay with 40 seconds of the session remaining. When Matt Ryan made it 4-2 Panthers at 44.46 there was vital daylight between the teams once again but Clan were never out of it and piled on the shot count against a home defence who lost giant defenceman Brent Henley to misconduct at 47.11. The visitors were however unable to make any breakthrough with goaltender Craig Kowalski standing firm to ensure the points remained in the Lace City Period Scores: 1-1, 2-1, 1-0 Penalty Mins: Not 4+6+12=22, Bra 4+4+0=8 Powerplay: Not 1/2, Bra 2/4 Shots On: Craig Kowalski 13+12+17=42, Kyle Jones 12+13+6=31 Referee: Neil Wilson Game Notes: Braehead’s opening goal was their 300th scored on the road in all EIHL competitive games. Nottingham’s Craig Kowalski dressed in his 200th competitive EIHL game Challenge Cup Group A Fife Flyers 5 Edinburgh Capitals 0 Flyers dominated rivals Capitals from the off in this Challenge Cup group A match and booked their own place in the quarter finals while almost certainly seeing the end of Capitals chances. Goaltender Kevin Regan made 25 saves for his shutout with the visitors drawing a blank for the second successive game. Flyers were quickly into their stride and took charge of the game in a first period where they built up a 3-0 lead. Matt Reber opened the scoring after 10.54 on the powerplay and defenceman Matt Nickerson scored his first Flyers goal at 12.07 to double the advantage. Danny Stewart made it three at 16.06 and already it was clear the visitors were struggling to create meaningful offence. Defensively Capitals did tighten up but the damage had already been done. The second session saw Jordan Fulton add one more to the home tally on the powerplay at 24.34 and the third period saw Flyers go nap with Rok Pajic on target at 50.01 to complete a fine night’s work in a week where the club had celebrated their 75th anniversary. Period Scores: 3-0, 1-0, 1-0 Penalty Mins: Fif 4+10+6=20, Edi 6+4+4=14 Powerplay: Fif 2/6, Edi 0/8 Shots On: Kevin Regan 5+13+7=25, Tomas Hiadlovsky 15+15+7=37 Referee: Rab Cowan Challenge Cup Group B Sheffield Steelers 3 Coventry Blaze 2 (After Overtime) Despite trailing to an Adam Henrich Blaze goal for most of this Challenge Cup Group B match, Steelers hit back to finally take the extra point in overtime thanks to a strike from skipper Steven Goertzen. That Henrich effort had come at 9.03 on the powerplay and had seen Matt Soderstrom’s men lead from that point until into period three. It was then that up stepped the experienced Steelers sniper Jeff Legue with a powerplay double at 46.42 and 50.53, with the latter on a two-man advantage that also saw Henrich ejected for abuse. Steelers probably thought they had turned the game their way but Blaze showed great resilience and ex Steeler Ashley Tait popped up 94 seconds from the end of regulation to make it 2-2 and send the tie into overtime. With 54 seconds left of the extra five minute period it was Goertzen who sent the home faithful home happy as he fired past Mike Zacharias to give his side the important extra point.
