MATCHDAY 13 SOUTHSIDE FURY F.C. v ATHERTON F.C PETERSEN PARK, EDMONTON FRIDAY 28TH JUNE 2013 Coup de grâce. Southside Fury hosted the high flying Atherton Eagles on Friday night at Petersen Park, Edmonton in a match that was an opportunity for the Eagles to close the gap on the two leading teams, who were playing away matches to top six opposition. Southside Fury unfortunately, has had a poor 2013 season, however to their credit, they fielded a full strength squad and remained competitive, which is admirable. However, they were up against an Atherton side that was coming off a comprehensive home win last week and were in a buoyant mood. It wasn’t long after the kickoff that the Atherton Eagles took the lead, when Jamie Cuda slotted home past the Fury keeper Dave Shand in the 2nd minute, which gave the visitors a solid foundation to build upon, and build they did. Captain Johnny Wilkinson took his chance to add to his season tally with a nicely worked goal in the 5th minute. It was looking ominous for the suitably shell shocked Edmonton side. The Fury composed themselves and with substitutions feverously being conducted on the home teams bench, the game settled somewhat. Atherton were controlling the game and maintaining possession, with the high percentage of possession, it wasn’t long before the constant pressure told, when the midfield man and birthday boy, Aaron Mead made it 3-0 on the quarter hour mark. Atherton had clear air and took the opportunity to give players a run, Joson Curcio came off the bench to make an instant impact, to score with a well taken 4th goal in the 23rd minute. With the defence working well in harness, the midfield and forwards were making use of the wide open spaces of the park and after some sparkling interplay between players, it was the gentile Englishman Lewis Short, who gleefully bagged his third for the season. It was now 5-0 with 10 minutes to go in the first half; Southside Fury was under the pump but continued to defend in numbers, much to their credit. With the half time whistle imminent, Joson Curcio grabbed his opportunity to take his tally for the game to two, with an individual run that culminated in a fine finish, leaving the Fury wishing the half would soon come to a close. Half Time: Southside Fury 0 v Atherton 6 With the advent of the second half, it marked a debut for young Amos Smith, believed to be the youngest player in the Division at 16 years and 28 days, to take up his position on the wing. It was an exuberant Smith that took to the field which marked a turning point in his young career. He was involved in many plays and applied himself well and will benefit from his first foray into senior football. Whilst defender Nat Cuda, found himself in a forward position following a weaving run and finished with aplomb within 2 minutes following the resumption of play, giving his teammates a cameo of his hidden attacking skills. The second half was shaping up as a carbon copy of the first half. With the scoreline mounting it was a good opportunity to give aspiring young goalkeeper Peter Cuda another opportunity to impress. Unfortunately no sooner had he taken up his position, Southside Fury decided to give this young keeper some curry, with a full blooded drive, following a sporadic attack down the right flank, leaving Cuda the task of picking the ball out of the back of the net. Fortunately his teammates saw the humorous side of the goal and proceeded to get the goal back with interest. Southside Fury was rewarded for their efforts with a well taken and deserved goal. The Eagles were on a mission, it was a matter of scoring goals in order to improve the GD column, and it was with this in mind, Lewis Short took it on himself to lead by example, by claiming his second of the match and with the Eagles leading 8-1, players were queuing up to get their names on the scoresheet. Substitute Joey Curcio took advantage of some fine interplay with striker Alberto Homann, who had worked well without luck, to claim his first hatrick of the season in the 74th minute. The 9-1 scoreline was a true reflection of the gulf in the two teams and the coup de grâce came in the 80th minute with the awarding of a penalty, following a handball by a Southside Fury defender. The candidates were many, of those wanting to take the spot kick, when order was restored, it was the rangy midfielder Lewis Short, who calmly strode up, to stroke the ball into the net, sending the Fury keeper, Shand, the wrong way. Bringing to a close the goalscoring for the evening and giving Short his first hatrick of the season and bringing the final score to 10-1 to the victorious Eagles. The division now divides into two separate entities, with a round robin format with the last two teams standing, meeting in the Grand Final on September13th. The makeup of the divisions will be decided over this weekend and fixtures will be posted when all results are in, following last Fridays matches.
