MATH 161 CALCULUS FOR BUSINESS 1: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AND APPLICATIONS OF LEARNING CALCULUS? Executive Summary Calculus is the mathematics of change. It was developed by Gottfried Leibniz and Isaac Newton, who worked separately to come up with the foundations of calculus. While developing calculus, both Leibniz and Newton applied infinitesimals, which are considered as considerably small and yet nonzero quantities in computing and deriving their results. After serious criticisms regarding the existence of infinitesimals, the use of infinitely small quantities was replaced by the concept of quantities being close to others, limits in an aim to give calculus a logical foundation. Calculus is divided into two main branches; differential and integral calculus. Differential calculus is often applied in determining the steepness or slope of a curve, while integral calculus is concerned with volumes and areas of complex figures. The study of calculus is significant to a wide range of disciplines such as economics, statistics, science, engineering, and architecture. It is therefore important for all students to take calculus for business 1 to acquire the basic skills that will help them in their different professions, since calculus is useful to a wide range of careers.
