MATS & BJORN Following up on Wilanders comment (yesterdays post)....paraphrasing....I did not want such and such grip and be a flat hitter...I wanted to copy Borg. Watch the video accompanying todays post. A lesson by Bjorn Borg...paraphrasing...I was supposed to do this but I did not...I did that...and I was also told to do this... but I did not do that either... Little Bill Johnson was playing finals in the 1930s against Big Bill Tilden. Little Bill was hitting topspin with his western grip forehand. With television exposure in the 1960s, Rod Laver introduced hitting topspin groundstrokes on both sides to an audience around the world. In the 1970s, Vic Braden became a national figure in US tennis with his one minute tennis tips on the PBS network. Vic, at the time, was known has a topspin fanatic. Tennis for the Future, Bradens first book (1977) finally eliminated guess work from tennis instruction. Vic brought fact based instruction to those seeking truth. He was a myth-buster. His approach was looked upon as radical and now it is looked upon as obsolete. Watch clips of Wilander and Borgs strokes. High low high. Inside out. Fundamentals stand the test of time. One cannot violate physical laws. Read Bradens first book. It is still the number one book for stroke-production. The photo of Matss backhand from yesterdays post represents the Great Base well. From Borgs lesson, you will hear the set of problems he faced from the old school of thought. Today the new school of thought just confuses the tennis public in a different way. Tennis is tough enough for our newcomers. (Beginners) Children learning the game need quality information. Bradens work has gone through the first two phases of revolutionizing facts. 1) 1st Facts in tennis are often ridiculed. 2) 2nd Facts in tennis are often violently opposed. 3) 3rd Facts in tennis should, but seldom do, become self-evident. It is my opinion that the cycle of confusion in tennis instruction will keep spinning faster than the spin on Nadals forehand. Tennis needs your help to stop the spinning. Thank you for joining our efforts to help tennis instruction through the Great Base Initiative. (free on-line course) Check our post tomorrow. It will clarify yesterdays and todays post. A picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks for sharing. Steve Smith
