MAUI SURF AUG 2nd Small to near moderate swell can be found along - TopicsExpress

MAUI SURF AUG 2nd Small to near moderate swell can be found along select south facing shores today but the swell peaked yesterday and is on the way down and should be back to background levels over the weekend. East and northeast facing shores have a moderate to near high windswell offering rough and sloppy surf around waist-shoulder high levels. Fresh upstream tradewinds will continue through the weekend to keep at least small to potentially moderate windswell going through the weekend, thanks to high pressure northeast of the state. Although select north shore breaks could pull in some wrapping windswell at small levels, the surf overall on the north is flat. a low southeast of New Zealand strengthened far south of French Polynesia earlier this week, aiming a fetch of strong gales toward our islands. The resulting swell should arrive around Tuesday or Wednesday and may peak at moderate levels with a long fade through the rest of the week. A building low far east of Japan may be able to produce a tiny to small west-northwest to northwest swell that would arrive around Wednesday of next week, but the odds are fairly low. More details to come. The South Pacific is expected to stay rather quiet through the forecast period with only some hint of action later next week. Hurricane Gil is still active far to the east-southeast of the islands but any swell it produces will be heavily blocked by the Big Island. At this time it is still too early to know with certainty how this storm will affect Hawai`i, but most models show the storm fading far from Hawai`i.
