MAUI SURF REPORT SEPT 12th: Our north and northwest facing shores - TopicsExpress

MAUI SURF REPORT SEPT 12th: Our north and northwest facing shores will continue to see upper-end small to moderate surf rolling through the day today with a slow fade into the weekend expected. Tiny to small surf may still linger into the following week. South facing shores also have a little action as a mix of small south-southeast and south-southwest swells pass through the island chain. The current northwest swell was generated late last week and over the weekend as a low developed near Kamchatka, building a strong gale aimed fairly well toward Hawai`i as it tracked east toward the Gulf of Alaska. Upstream tradewinds are only around moderate levels which will keep our local windswell small and below waist-high levels through Saturday. Looking to the southern hemisphere, a low south of French Polynesia set up a short fetch aimed loosely in our direction. Although this fetch was long-lived, it was short, resulting in just a tiny to small background swell that should ripple in through the next several days. Not much more than background swell is likely through the rest of the period. Another low southeast of Kamchatka is setting up a fetch aimed in our direction which may provide us with a tiny to small northwest swell late in the weekend, potentially getting a boost around Tuesday. The area east and southeast of New Zealand is becoming more active, but most of this energy is not being directed well in our direction. The models show a better chance for swell development later in the weekend and early next week, but nothing exciting is expected at the moment. North and northwest facing shores should continue to see moderate surf around 6-10+ foot at most of the better exposed breaks, potentially higher from time to time at the best locations. Upper West shores should also see some fun action around 4-6+ foot at the best breaks. South facing shores may be a bit bigger than expected at small to moderate levels around 1-4 foot or a bit higher at the best breaks. Windswell along the east and northeast facing shores should stay around 1-3 foot.
