MAUI SURF REPORT SEPT 18th: The windswell will be the only real chance for surf today although a few tiny lingering waves may still limp through select north shore breaks today. The windswell is on the way down, so don’t expect much more than small to moderate choppy and sloppy surf along the windward exposed breaks. Minor swell out of the south may provide tiny to small surf along the south facing shores today but most breaks will stay flat. The combination of southeast and south-southwest energy may increase the odds a bit though. This pattern should continue off and on through the next several days and beyond. The area southeast of New Zealand has seen some action recently but most of that energy was aimed toward French Polynesia. If we’re lucky, we could see a small to moderate bump arriving next Monday, followed by smaller reinforcements through the rest of next week. A gale near Kamchatka has been setting up a northwest swell over the past couple of days with the potential of providing us with a small bump over the weekend. The models continue to depict a building gale in the Gulf of Alaska over the next few days. If all goes well we should see a small north-northeast swell arriving over the weekend as well, possibly higher if we’re lucky. The models also continue to show a typhoon developing far west of the islands this weekend, with a northerly track toward the western Aleutians. If this storm recurves it has the potential of setting up a decent swell for us.
