MAUREEN MWANAWASA WANTS AUGUST 19 TO BE A PUBLIC HOLIDAY.......... FOR THE COUNTRY TO REMEMBER LEVYS LEADERSHIP THE Mwanawasa family has called on government to declare August 19 as Mwanawasa Day to convey the importance of leadership among youths by emulating the late Republican President Levy Mwanawasas lifestyle as a leader. Former first lady Maureen Mwanawasa said August 19 is important day for the country and should be set in remembrance of Dr Mwanawasa. She said this at the sixth memorial anniversary of Dr Mwanawasa at the Memorial Park in Lusaka yesterday. Her appeal was to government to recognise and appreciate the contributions that her late husband made to the growth of Zambia. “August 19 is very important day for Zambia because it is intended to send out a message on the importance of leadership more especially to young people,” Dr Mwanawasa said. She appealed to leaders in the country to take leadership very seriously by ensuring that the people of Zambia are their first priority. Dr Mwanawasa said it is important for government to consider young people in higher governing positions. “People aspiring for leadership should also deal with issues affecting women and children because they are the most affected,” she said. Peoples Party President (PP) Mike Mulungoti said Dr Mwanawasa had set a legacy of good governance. He said Dr Mwanawasa would be remembered for his integrity of acting upon his pledges and contribution to Zambia’s growth. Dr Mwanawasa died on August 19, 2008 at Percy Military Hospital near Paris in France. He was 59 years old.
