MAYON TOURISM ADVISORY 2 ALBAY ASSURES SAFE TOURISM AND CONVENTION ACTIVITIES DESPITE MAYON ERUPTION Consequent to Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) hoisting of Alert Level 3 over Mayon Volcano restiveness, local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) authorities assured that Albay’s capital Legazpi City remains perfectly safe for holding of conventions, gatherings and similar activities. Legazpi City is located outside the designated 6-kilometer permanent and even 8-kilometer extended danger zones. More visitors and tourists even flock to Legazpi City and neighbouring localities of Albay to witness from safe distance and ideal viewing points the glowing crater and picturesque of the volcano spewing lava. Phivolcs has also assured of regular monitoring and updates on the abnormal activities of Mayon Volcano, with corresponding preparedness and mitigating measures carried out by the respective DRRM authorities of concerned local governments in areas surrounding the volcano. With the present condition of the Mayon volcano, air, land and sea travels are still safe. In case of ash explosion, ash fall is expected to drift westward with the prevailing wind direction of Southwest monsoon thus posing no danger to air and land travel going in and out of Legazpi City. In case of lava flow, it is projected to go the direction of the southeast quadrant of the volcano and more confined in Bunga and Mabinit gulleys that can only extend less than 6 kilometers which are also very far from the business center of Legazpi City Albay Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (PDRRMC) has declared the following sites as safe vantage points for tourists and visitors: Lignon Hill Cagsawa Ruins Daraga Church Legazpi City Boulevard Taysan Hills Quituinan Hills The following tourism activities, however, are strictly prohibited: ATV ride activities going towards Mayon Volcano Mayon climbing/trekking Playing golf at the Dona Pepita golf course All other recreational/exploratory activities within the PDZ and EDZ For further inquiries, please call PTCAO (52) 742-0250/742-0421.
