MAYOR RESPONDS TO GATEWAY CRITICISM In response to recent criticism reported on the Moree Gateway development and the investigations for a cinema, Mayor Cr Katrina Humphries would like to respond to the local community on what information has been provided. “In light of extremely negative local press I feel I have a need to set the record straight about the Moree Gateway development and the investigations to have a cinema in the Moree Memorial Hall. For many years now Moree has become landlocked and there has been a general lack of space for local businesses to grow into bigger premises, thus creating space for smaller businesses to grow into medium businesses. Council owns the land at the Gateway development. In years to come, when this subdivision is entirely sold there will be a big gain to the Moree Plains Shire Council with an increased base rate. For many years our community has been telling Council we need development and employment, which is exactly what this development will bring to the Moree Plains Shire. Plus it will provide an opportunity for business growth and emphasise Moree is open and ready to do business. The negative article which appears in the Moree Champion could have been a front page story titled Moree Moves On. The questions posed by the journalist could have been answered if the Editor had bothered to read the Draft Minutes of the Ordinary Council Meeting 26 June 2014, all is there for the community to see. Further to the criticism regarding the $250,000 budgeted for a cinema, it is exactly that, budgeted. Once again had the journalist bothered to read the proposal the Editor would then have understood that further work is to be done on the business proposal prior to implementing the decision. The cinema money is a budget the Council is working on. Once again I have to explain to the Moree Champion the difference between budgeting and actual allocation. Furthermore, I extend an invitation to the concerned ratepayers to attend the Moree Plains Shire Council Ordinary Council Meetings and I express a personal invitation to the Editor of the Moree Champion newspaper to attend Council meetings or provide a senior journalist to attend the meetings. If they don’t understand what is happening than please ask before going to print, this community deserves accurate responsible journalism” the Mayor said.
