MBP Buck of the Day! Karsten R On Sunday November 30, 2014, Garett Collins, a buddy of mine from church, invited me and two of my brothers out to his property, near Niles in Cass county Mi, to do a drive after the church service. We got to his place around 2:00p.m. and figured out a plan for who was gonna sit where, and who was gonna do the pushing. My oldest brother, John, and I were going to sit first. I got to my spot at about 2:15, and sat down behind a pile of field stones on the corner of a big hardwoods, about 100yards to the south of the swamp they were pushing, across the field. The wind was blowing pretty hard from the west so I had no problem there. I was only sitting for about two minutes when the first two deer came out, running straight toward me. The leading deer was a nice six, with a doe not to far behind. I had loaded my Remington 870 with a rotation of buckshot, slug, buckshot, slug. I propped it up on the rocks and waited for the buck to run into my sights. I shot him at about fifteen yards and he dropped. The doe veered to my right, after the shot, and I missed her twice. Not even five minutes later another doe came out following the path of the first. I had reloaded with the same rotation, and shot her at about 30 yards. At this point my heart was beating pretty hard. By this time Garett and Logan, my other brother, were close to the edge of the swamp, and I didnt figure there would be anymore deer so I got up to check out the six point. When I got to him a coyote ran out of the swamp way off to the east. While I was watching the coyote with my back to the swamp, I heard Garett yell my name. When I turned around I saw him, a huge buck, running up the edge of the woods I was just sitting in. He had ran behind me when I was looking the other way. I spun around with the gun to my shoulder and shot, he dropped but was trying to get back up. The slug had hit his spine. I put another slug in and shot one more time, he stopped moving. He was twenty yards away. It all happened so fast I didnt have time really see how big he was, or how many points he had. My hands started shaking when I walked up to him. He was the biggest, most symmetrical eight point I had ever seen. Within in ten minutes I tagged out. Something I have never done before, and will probably never do again. John could see everything from across the field where he was sitting, about 300 yards to the west. He said he was saying shoot him, shoot him, when the buck ran passed me. I left my gun with the deer, and pushed the rest of the day. It was a couple miles but only felt like a few feet. I started bow hunting when I was 12, and Im 23 now. If I didnt love hunting as much as I do, I would probably just quit now because I know this just doesnt happen all the time. The Lord blessed me with this buck. Garett and I have hunted together for a long time, and I owe him a big thanks for letting me come along and hunt his property that day. He doesnt shoot small bucks and had left that swamp as a safe spot till the end of season. He told us there was a big deer out there, but none of us knew he was that big. Im sure he will continue to harvest big deer in the future.
