MCI cuts 200 MBBS seats in Chhattisgarh The Chhattisgarh government is making desperate attempts to convince the Medical Council of India (MCI) to reverse its recent decision to 200 medical seats in the state for the ensuing 2014-15 academic years. With the cut, only 250 seats are left, leaving other aspirants in a lurch. According to information, the MCI found a host of deficiencies in all the state-run medical colleges at Raipur, Bilaspur, Jagdalpur and Raigarh and it cut 50 seats in each of the institutions. While Raipur and Bilaspur Medical colleges hitherto had 150 seats each, the MCI has permitted to counselling for only 100 seats in each college. The Jagdalpur Medical College, which earlier had 100 seats, has been permitted to recruit for only 50 seats. The Raigarh Medical College, which only had 50 seats, has been declared a zero year with the all the seats being cut for various deficiencies, including faculty. Talking to TOI, Dr Sumit Tripathi, deputy director, DME office said, we have already resolved 6 issues out of 10 deficiencies pointed out by a team of MCI at the time of inspection in Raipur Medical College. He said efforts are on to resolve remaining deficiencies. Dr Tripathi said the shortcomings pointed out by the MCI included shortage of senior residents (SRs) and unavailability of e-class rooms. He said the recruitment of senior residents is under process and all vacancies would be filled soon. According to officials, as per MCI norms 60 Presently, 60 SRs are required at Raipur Medical College but only 50% are on rolls. As regards e-class facilities, officials claim that a technical glitch at the time of inspection caused the problem. The problem of server and high speed Internet connection will be resolved very soon, they claimed. Dr Sumit meanwhile disclosed that counselling for 250 seats has been conducted. He expressed the hope that the MCI would clear the remaining seats by the end of July, after they submit a compliance report. He also revealed that they were trying to get 100 seats each for two upcoming medical colleges in Rajnandgaon and Ambikapur. If nothing else works out, we would recruit 200 students in these new colleges and compete the shortfall, he added. Dr Tripathi said the officials of medical education would be meeting the MCI officials and the health minister in this regard on Friday.
