Chakwera, who referred to the party as the New MCP, told thousands of people who gathered at Ntchelachela Ground in Kasungu to attend his maiden rally on Sunday that selfish leaders who abuse power will not be welcomed in the party. “This is a new Malawi Congress Party. Time is gone that you should look up to us leaders as if we are the bosses, we are only your servants and you are the bosses. There is no point in you the members of the party to be kneeling down to worship us leaders as if we are gods. “The new MCP is visionary and will only serve the best interest of Malawians and not that of leaders. We don’t want people to compose songs of only Chakwera, it’s not about me, it’s about MCP,” he said. Chakwera who arrived at the venue at 2:20pm in a convoy of 10 vehicles and a group of party sympathisers chanting songs challenged members of the party to remain democratic to win back trust of Malawians. “MCP is the party that knows about democracy and it must be everybody’s responsibility to remain democratic so that other parties can emulate from us. Let’s be exemplary” he added. On his part former president of the party John Tembo urged all members to give the new leader all the support to ensure victory in 2014. “MCP has faced a lot difficulties but let’s all unite so that the party is ushered into government next year. Last time, we held a party rally at this venue people could just pass by and not bother to stop and listen, but today under the leadership of Dr Chakwela everyone is flocking here” he said. Commenting on his retirement Tembo told the crowd that he does not ambitions to hold any position in the party. “To date, journalists still ask me that what will I be doing now that I am no longer president of the party. The answer is that I will go home and rest, I will be reading and writing. I will also be doing some farming,” he said.
