The second presentation was from Ken Kelly from NC Employment Security Commission (ESC) which expects to change its name in the future to the Division of Work Force Solutions. ESC has its current website at https://ncesc/default.aspx. The State of NC funds this program to assist veterans and non-veterans. ESC will work with all discharges. The unemployment figures for April 2013 in Moore County were 8.2% which is a steady decrease from December 2012. Mr. Kelly actively recruits employers to list jobs and ESC is even able to help someone who has been convicted of a felony by being federally bonded. Another bonus for potential employers is a Work Opportunity Tax Credit. See below for highlights of this briefing. • Unemployment Compensation: The federal extension of unemployment compensation benefits will end on 30 June 2013. The maximum compensation will return to 26 weeks & the weekly benefit amount will be reduced to $350. A PIN is required to see job opportunities. Employers can also search for potential applicants. • Local Workforce Office: The ESC has a local Workforce office in Moore County at 245 Shepherd Trail, Aberdeen with hours of 0830 to 1700 Monday through Friday. The office provides space for employer interviews, computers for job searching, and various workshops about how to interview and build a resume. • Veteran Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP): This program is available to help a veteran go back to school when they aren’t covered by another program such as the VA’s Vocational Rehabilitation. Twelve months of schooling can be covered for a cost of up to $1564 a month. Ashes of the deceased cannot be withheld due to lack of payment.
