MDOT spokeswoman Diane Cross said talks have focused on been about less-frequent road cleanings and trash pickup along interstates and trunklines — state roads that are labeled with the “M-” prefix — to make sure issues that concern road safety are prioritized. “We’ll go broke over safety issues,” Cross said. “But there’s only so much maintenance money in the pot. I’ve been fielding many calls from residents about trash along highways and cleanup. I remind people about our record-breaking winter.”
