“ MEANING OF NAMASTE “ “ NAMASTE “ means a declaration of submission significantly, the Sanskrit word for subjugation is “ Niyamaha “ which is close to “ Namaha “ meaning obeisance or submission. “ NAMASTE “ – the sonority of its sacred sound is believed to have a quasi-magical valve corresponding to a creative energy change. This change is that of aligning oneself in harmony with vibration of cosmos itself. It is an expression of happiness. This sets a positive tone for further development of a harmonious relationship between two individuals. “ NAMASTE “ is said while bringing together both palms of the hands before the heart in prayer position and lightly bowing the head and shoulder. Herewith you show that your hands are unarmed and that you come in peace. “ NAMASTE “ is comprised of the activities of the hands ( mudras ), the mouth ( mantras ) and the mind ( yoga ). Thus Namaste is in essence equivalent to meditation that depends upon the relationship between the three. “ NAMASTE “ is a word, can be broken into three parts – “ Nam “, which means bowing or submitting “ Namas “ is a reverent greeting or salutation and “ Te “ simply means “ to you. “ NAMASTE “ reflects the union of opposites. In this context, Namaste is equated with the image of Ardhanarishvara ( the diety made of half male and half female forms ) when performed during a marriage. It means that the husband and wife too will remain united like the hands joined in Namste. “ NAMASTE “ could just be a casual or formal greeting, a cultural convention or an act of worship. However there is much more to it than meets the eye. In Sanskrit “ Namaha “ can be literally interpreted as “ na ma” ( not mine ). It has a spiritual significance of negating or reducing one’s ego in the presence of another. “ NAMASTE “ involves bringing the joined palms of both the hands overhead the crown or the Sahastrara Chakra lines. This variation indicates a deeper respect. This simple gesture adds a sense of respect to the concept of peace. *****************************
