INDIANAPOLIS – WASHINGTON DC: Thirty high school students who participate in Burmese American Community Institute’s Upward College Summer Program will travel July 11-14 to Washington, D.C. The purpose of the trip is to introduce the young scholars to the American democracy and its institutions. The students will have the opportunity to expose with national capital, legislative offices, and governmental offices, and to the cultural and historical heritage of the United States. The scholars will meet with the office of U.S. Congressman André Carson, officials at the U.S. Department of State, the White House Initiative, and U.S. Agency for International Development. In addition, the group will tour the U.S. Capitol Building, Supreme Court Building, and museums and monuments in Washington, D.C. The Upward College Summer Scholar Program is designed to prepare high school students from Burma for college, leadership, and future success through unique programming and participatory action research project that seeks to address the issues in the Burmese-American Communities.
