MEDIA ALERT 7.30 – Great Barrier Reef Investigation There are calls for members of the Great Barrier Reef board to resign after a 7:30 investigation revealed two members have links to mining interests. The same board members, unsuccessful Labor candidate Tony Mooney and Queensland’s top public servant Jon Grayson both have links to members of the Obeid family. Documents obtained under Freedom of Information show Tony Mooney and Jon Grayson helped set the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s position on port developments despite Mr Mooney earning a quarter of a million dollars a year at a coal company and Mr Grayson owning shares in a gas services company with Eddie Obeid Jr. The documents show the port position statement originally proposed by the authority’s experts was significantly watered down at board level with a clause opposing port developments removed and the board instead requesting more consultation with the mining industry. I think it would greatly increase the confidence that the Australian public and the international community could have in the management of the reef if these two men stepped aside from the board,” says Louise Mathieson from Greenpeace. Both men deny a conflict of interest. See the full report tonight on 7:30. 7.30 is hosted by Leigh Sales and airs on ABC1. You can catch up on missed episodes at: abc.net.au/7.30 or abc.net.au/iview.
