MEDIA MISREPORTED EU OBESITY RULING, CLAIMS FULLFACT Most of the media have reported that yesterday’s EU court ruling means that obesity “can” be a disability, rather than that it “is”. “What’s the difference, and does it matter?” asked UK’s fact checking organisation, FullFact. It does matter, stated FullFact in their bulletin today; and both the Daily Mail and the Daily Express got it wrong. The Express erroneously reported, “Fury as Euro court rules the obese are disabled” and the Mail incorrectly stated, “Obesity IS a disability, rules highest EU court.” FullFact set out the facts: “The court said that obesity itself isn’t a disability, because it doesn’t necessarily ‘entail the existence of a limitation’ on someone’s contribution in the workplace. But if it does, in a particular person’s case, give rise to a limitation on their ability to work or find employment, then a court should protect that person from discrimination.. “It’s the effect of obesity that matters, not the fact of it.” Once again, some of the British media have failed to accurately report about the European Union. Is this from incompetent journalism, or are these media misreporting on purpose, knowing full well the full facts? https://fullfact.org/factcheck/law/did_eu_rule_obesity_is_disability-37732 (Report and commentary by Jon Danzig)
