MEDIA RELEASE 15 January 2015 Harmony Day event registrations open Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Social Services Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells today invited registrations for this year’s Harmony Day events. Held on 21 March, Harmony Day is Australias largest national multicultural event. Senator Fierravanti-Wells said Harmony Day gave schools, universities, workplaces and communities the opportunity to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity. It also recognises community groups and individuals who have promoted community harmony. “Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone,” Senator Fierravanti-Wells said. “This will be the 15th anniversary of Harmony Day, which has gone from strength to strength since initiated by the Howard Coalition Government. “Last year there were more than 6,600 registered Harmony Day celebrations, more than any previous year. “This year’s events will celebrate and recognise those who passionately believe that everyone belongs in our community. “Australia is the world’s most successful immigration nation. This government will continue to support our values and way of life in this great country. “Harmony Day also provides a great opportunity to thank all those who organised and took part in the tens of thousands of events that have been held during Harmony Day’s long and proud history.” Senator Fierravanti-Wells said we live in one of the most prosperous and harmonious nations in the world. “As we look to the future, our challenge is to keep it that way. Diversity, tolerance and mutual respect and the welcome we extend to people of all faiths and minorities will be as much a part of our future as a feature of our past. “I encourage organisers to register their event at harmony.gov.au and celebrate this wonderful event,” she said.
