MEDIA RELEASE CHRISTMAS ISLAND ASYLUM SEEKERS HOLD SOLIDARITY PROTEST FOR REZA BARATI Around 100 asylum seekers on Christmas Island have held an overnight sit-in protest, outside their compounds, calling for justice for Reza Barati, the asylum seeker killed on Manus Island on 17 February. The protest began on Tuesday 27 May, around 5.30pm Christmas Island time. The protesters displayed placards including ones with the now iconic photo of Reza Barati. Like the majority of the asylum seekers on Christmas Island, the protesters, are among those who are now threatened with being the next victims sent to Manus Island and Nauru. “Some of us have been on Christmas Island for over a year and now Immigration is telling us we will be sent to Manus Island or Nauru,” one asylum seeker said from Christmas Island. It is not known if the protest is continuing today, Wednesday, 28 May. The protest coincides with national “Justice for Reza” protests on 28, 29 May. Protests are being held in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Darwin, Wednesday 28 May. Sydney’s vigil and speakout, is being held Thursday, 29 May, 5.30pm, Sydney Town Hall.
