MEDIA RELEASE Canadian mission to boost opportunities in livestock production The Embassy of Canada in Manila recently hosted a delegation of Alberta, Canada-based livestock organizations, in partnership with the Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture. Organizations including the Canadian Livestock Genetics Association, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Alberta Goat Association, Canola Council of Canada, and a number of livestock exporters from the province of Alberta met with local stakeholders and companies from the Philippines private sector as well as government representatives, for a whole-day program consisting of a technical seminar, luncheon, and one-on-one business meetings. “The goal of this mission is to highlight possible avenues for cooperation between our countries and also come up with beneficial, innovative solutions, which can positively impact the livestock industries for the Philippines and Canada,” said Canada’s Ambassador to the Philippines Neil Reeder in his welcome remarks to over 50 participants attending the opening seminar. The event was attended by Undersecretary Livestock Operations Jose Reano of the Department of Agriculture, who also provided the opening remarks. The province of Alberta, in western Canada, is known for its fine livestock, raised in a clean, natural environment. The province has dedicated 50 million acres of land for crop and livestock production, with 40 percent of the 4 million cattle in Canada located in Alberta. Genetic material from Canadian dairy cattle is also in demand around the world exporting to more than 95 countries. The Canadian livestock industry maintains strict health standards to meet the safety regulations in the marketplace. Stringent processes like mandatory cattle identification and animal disease surveillance programs provide assurances to buyers and consumers that any potential hazards are minimized and that any problems can be quickly identified, traced, and resolved. #####
