MEDIA RELEASE City Supports Artists View of Downtown YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES | September 18, 2013 The City of Yellowknife welcomes visiting artist Hannah Minzloff to lead an interactive workshop engaging community members to contribute their ideas towards enhancing Yellowknife’s downtown through the use of art. The multifaceted project is scheduled to take place from September 22 to 29, 2013 and is being led by members of the Yellowknife Artist Run Community Centre (YK ARCC) with funding provided by the Government of Northwest Territories, Education, Culture and Employment and supported by the City of Yellowknife. “The City was approached to use property located on 50 Street as a part of the workshop led by Ms. Minzloff. We welcome the opportunity for residents and artists to engage in meaningful dialogue with the purpose of beginning a creative process to beautify our downtown,” said Mayor Mark Heyck. Residents are invited to visit 5030 50 Street (beside Raven’s Pub) from September 23 to 27 to add their own vision or ideas to an interactive chalk-wall display which will act as one of the cornerstone projects to Ms. Minzloff’s visit. Ms. Minzloff recently collaborated with the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission on a revitalization project which features an interactive exhibition encouraging open conversation around the identity, environment, community and history of the area. While in Yellowknife, Ms. Minzloff will lead a public forum and workshops organized by YK ARCC. The first event is a free forum taking place on Sunday, September, 22 from 10 a.m. to noon at YK ARCC, located at 4913-50 Street. Local artists, architects, community builders, business owners and all residents are invited to discuss the potential of downtown Yellowknife. Coffee and cinnamon buns will be provided. The second event is a workshop on September 22 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and again on Monday, September 23 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Participants will be provided with an opportunity to creatively express their vision through storytelling, illustration, video or photograph. The workshop will focus on creating both a portrait of Yellowknife at present while also challenging participants to envision what the city could look like in the future. Registration fee for the workshop is twenty dollars and registrants are asked to send in a brief description of “What community means to them” to ykarcc@gmail . Workshop participants will meet at YK ARCC. A final presentation of created work will be on exhibit beginning on Friday, September 27 at locations to be determined.
