MEDIA RELEASE: (FYI... This city initiative been in the making for weeks) City of Columbus Announces Initiative for Greater Dialogue with Community Today, Mayor Michael B. Coleman, City Council President Andrew Ginther, and Public Safety Chair Zach Klein are announcing a community outreach initiative to seek input on policing in Columbus. The initiative is in response to the national dialogue on building trust between the police and community. Chief Kim Jacobs has been tasked with drafting a report of recommendations for Public Safety Director George Speaks that will address policing in Columbus, as well as increasing trust within the community. “Columbus already has the best division of police in the nation and I support the work of our police officers,” said Mayor Coleman. “Let’s take this opportunity to look in the mirror and strengthen our training and practices while connecting with the community.” Chief Jacobs will hold five (5) community forums, one in each police zone. These forums will provide the Chief and her executive staff an opportunity to listen to community concerns and accept suggestions regarding the Columbus Division of Police. “I’m proud of the men and women who keep our city safe, and the communities they serve,” said City Council President Ginther. “Let’s continue working together to build a strong Columbus.” The Chief will also review forthcoming recommendations from President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing; Governor Kasich’s Ohio Task Force on Community-Police Relations; and Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine’s working group to review police training. Upon completion of the community forums and reviewing the national, state, and local recommendations, Chief Jacobs will draft recommendations based upon best practices that will work in the City of Columbus. “I am encouraged by Chief Jacobs’ outreach to community members during this time of national dialogue about public safety,” said Councilmember Klein. “I look forward to recommendations to keep Columbus safe.” The goal of these recommendations is to enhance training, review policing policies and procedures, increase education and outreach, and better improve upon relationships and trust between the community and police. Times, dates, and locations for each of the forums will be announced at a later date.
