MEDICAL UPDATE: Caribbean-Chikungunya. More than 3,000 locally acquired confirmed or probable cases of chikungunya fever have occurred in the Caribbean since October 2013, when the virus first emerged in the Americas. Chikungunya is an arboviral infection transmitted by mosquitoes. Travelers are advised to practice daytime insect precautions. * Martinique: Approximately 70-80 cases are occurring per week; the outbreak has yet to peak. * Guadeloupe: Approximately 140 cases are occurring per week; the outbreak has yet to peak. * Dominican Republic: >150 total cases; the outbreak has yet to peak. * Dominica: Approximately 8 cases are occurring per week; the outbreak has yet to peak. The outbreak is essentially over with only sporadic cases occurring in Saint Martin, Sint Maarten, Saint Barthelemy, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, French Guiana, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.
