MEDITATION. Ive been hearing I cant meditate. I think too much and I cant make it stop, so I cant meditate. I am a huge fan of meditation. In my experience, the practice of regular meditation does not to stop thoughts (impossible), but teaches us to identify with the space or the beingness that holds our thoughts, feelings, and perceptions. When one identifies with the substrate of the self, then one can experience thoughts, feelings, and even physical senses and sensations as the useful tools that they are. Thoughts, feelings and perceptions are not us, rather, they are experiences that we have. So what is us? Im not sure, but in my experience, the field that holds all these experiences is closer to my beingness than the objects in it. Meditation recalibrates my identity to the field. When we meditate, we can be the pinnacle of non-aggression. Thoughts arise and fall away. Feelings come and go. Sensations become apparent or not. We do not grapple with them. We dont engage with them. We dont get caught up or identify with them. Nor do we shove them away. My favorite method is the one I learned while studying at the Shambhala Center in Berkeley. It is to simply focus on the exhale cycle of the breath. Anytime I find myself getting wrapped up in a thought, I say to myself thinking!--just like dinging a little friendly bell. Then I go back to the ground, the matrix, the space that holds the thoughts, and I reidentify to the space in me. In my experience, meditation is good for bringing objectivity to all my experiences, for dispelling denser energies from my field, and for creating--yes--creating more time and spaciousness in my life.
