MEES DOUBLES IN SAVANNAH In his first outing sporting a shiny new #1 plate, newly-crowned AMA Pro Flat Track GNC champion Jared Mees took wins in the Pro-Am Singles and Open Pro Singles classes at the Sideways-N-Savannah half-mile event in Pooler, Georgia. Heat race wins in each class on the PBW Racing Honda gave Mees a pair of front row main event grid spots, but poor starts meant he had to really work for those heat wins. He fought hard to get past Chase Sconyers and Chad Cose in Pro-Am, and around Shayna Texter, Jamison Minor and Jason Griffin in Open Pro Singles. Texter took the holeshot in Open and led the field the first two times around. The big turnout of entries meant each of the singles classes had six heat races and three semis to set a pair of eighteen rider main events. Some other heat race winners included Kenny Coolbeth and Brandon Robinson, who each doubled, Chris Carr, Jarod Vanderkooi and Dan McRoberts, Sammy Halbert advanced to the Pro-Am main via the semi, but earned a direct transfer to the Open main event. Mees was out front early and dominated each main event. In the Pro-Am class, Robinson, Coolbeth and Halbert fought for the runner up spots. Halbert then dropped back as Carr moved into the fight. At the line it was Mees, Robinson and Coolbeth. The Open main saw those same three riders finish in the same order one more time. The AHMRA/SDTA event ran safely, and several riders commented that the Oglethorpe Raceway Park circuit is their favorite. Unfortunately, scoring/transponder gremlins put the event far behind schedule. With an early morning flight to catch in Jacksonville, Fla., we were forced to leave before the end of racing and had to miss the Pro-Am Twins main event and several amateur races, and had to forego the usual post-event rider interviews. Heres what we do know about the Pro-Am Twins class. Halbert, Coolbeth and Shawn McNary won the three heat races. In the first heat, Halbert followed Jason Griffin in the early laps before pulling away to a large gap on the field. Jeffrey Carver led the second heat race briefly on his new Dons Kawasaki-sponsored machine, but was seen pulling off after a close inside pass by Coolbeth in turn two. McNary enjoyed a solid win over Kolby Carlile. We were unable to confirm cause of Carvers heat race DNF or the main event results before this report was posted. ** Late update: Kenny Coolbeth announced his Pro-Am Twins win just a few minutes ago.
