MEET JO JO FARQUE! (pronouced Farqy/Farkie) - a cat we have been monitoring for the past 2 years now and the heaviest female leopard caught in the Okonjima Nature Reserve! I am sure you recognise the pic of her hiding behind an acacia bush? An image which was posted earlier this month in the fb posting called - SPOT THE LEOPARD? - A strange name you would say for a wild leopard in a Nature Reserve where our leopard names are usually from African origin with a beautiful & meaningful description . . . We are also sure you have heard of the name DAVID FARQUHARSON - a humble, determined and supportive lawyer based in London - who is now an AfriCat UK trustee member and a loyal AfriCat supporter! more about David: africat.co.uk/pages/contact_africat.php David lives in West London with his wife, Jo and three children. David and his wife first visited Okonjima in November 2010 and were massively impressed by the great work being carried out by the AfriCat Foundation and equally by the warmth of the African hospitality. Jo - AKA, JO JO - His wife then volunteered his services! (in a slightly forceful and determined way . . . David had very little choice in the matter). At the time ITV was filming the Cheetah Kingdom series and David offered any future assistance & advice he could give AfriCat - IF - we were by any chance approached for a follow-up series or approached by any other film-crew in the future . . . He wanted AfriCat to understand the complications behind contracts and long-term commitments etc and what most benefits AfriCat. . . . . and thats where he thought it would end . . . Little did David know that this was only the beginning of a challenging journey ahead! Many of you might have heard of the hardship AfriCat went through end 2010 - beginning 2011 . . . and if it had not been for David - there was a good chance we might have had to close down, with devastating results. A few trusted members both local and in the UK - had tried to hurt the foundation in every way possible and we only survived because of the expertise, determination and belief in justice of David and the 2 law firms SWANTURTON and Travers Smith (London, UK) Since 2011, as a corporate lawyer with a media and entertainment firm, David has assisted with the running of AfriCat UK and various work with the Foundations legal requirements and issues. We are truly grateful and the greatest symbol of gratitude AfriCat can give any supporter that has gone far beyond what was asked - is naming a cat after him/her -- because its not something we do here! If we had to name our cats after the names of all those amazing individuals that have helped us over the years - AfriCat would have sounded like some kind of orphanage - so we have a strict no-human-name-given-to-any-cat AfriCat policy - but this time the rule had to be broken! David however wanted the chosen cat to be named after his wife, who is also a lawyer and who was the actual person - back in 2011 - that wanted to help if at all possible. . . .. hence the name Jo Jo Farqy Outside of law and AfriCat, David enjoys spending time . . . . . helping AfriCat!! JO JO is the heaviest female leopard caught in the Okonjima Nature Reserve! Her weigtht: 48kg – BUT she was also feeding for the last three days in the box trap plus it looks as if shes expecting shortly. . . .. Body Length: 0.96m Leg Length: 0.58m Canines: Upper 3.1 cm; Lower 2.8 cm Well keep u posted - who knows another Electra in the making perhaps ?
