MEET MANDY! As Barry Manilow would sing, “Oh Mandy!” A three-year-old Boxer mix, Mandy arrived on October 14th at the rural Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina. She was not only a stray, but a pregnant stray at that. Mandy gave birth to one pup. Sadly, the pup did not survive. And Mandys life was also at risk. Testing heartworm positive meant she could not be adopted, but needed a rescue if she was going to survive. Mandy was slated to be euthanized on November 14th. Mary Lou Seymour with the Shelter Animal Advocates for the Aiken County Animal Shelter and its Heart Beat Goes On program that coordinates the heartworm treatment for rescues for the Aiken County shelter, urgently contacted us on the morning of November 14th. Mandy was in queue to be euthanized when Lori Free and her Purr-Fect Match Animal Rescue in Wisconsin offered to take Mandy, IF they could get help with her heartworm treatment costs. We immediately agreed and Mandys life was saved! Her heartworm treatment took place on November 18th. Christine, a volunteer who provided Mandy with her freedom ride from the shelter to the vet, had this to share: You could feel the tension leaving Mandys body as we drove away from the shelter. She was finally able to relax and laid her head on my lap during the drive. She took treats gently from my hand. She finally curled up in the back seat and slept!
