MEET OUR VOLUNTEERS -Mikkel Kyle Hi my name is Mikkel (pronounced Me-Kel), I am 37 years old and a California state Representative. I have been married for 15 years and have 3 children, Maureen 12, Elise 8 (Cherub survivor), and Lucas 5. When I was 25 weeks pregnant with Elise we had an ultrasound and the tech found that her heart was on the right side and they suggested that we see doctors in SanFransisco at UCSF Children’s hospital. We went down for a series of test, ultrasound, fetal heart ultrasound and a CT scan, it was the CT scan that confirmed her diagnosis of Left sided CDH but what we didn’t know is what went up in the hole. Elise was born via induction at 37 weeks, in September 2005, they immediately took her to be intubated and they were very successful with the first try. She had her surgery at 1 week old and that is where we found out that it was her liver that had gone up inside her diaphragm. When she was one month old they did a second surgery and they did a fundelplycation and put in a Gastostromy tube (G-tube). Elise was given a 20% chance of living. After 2.5 very emotional months we got to come home with her the day before Thanksgiving. She came home on Oxygen and several different medications. Elise is still a fighter to this day! Elise was also diagnosed with Auditory neuropathy and is severely hard of hearing, she uses sign language and is oral. I am currently a stay at home mom, and enjoy leaning sign language and being in the deaf community as well. I hope that by being a volunteer for Cherubs I can put CDH on map here in California for all the beautiful babies.
