MEET THE MAKERS - PENNY COOPER Penny Cooper is our only potter...shell be at our next two markets on August 9 and September 13. As well as manning her beautiful stall, you may also catch her putting the finishing touches to some of her gorgeous work. Shes been working with clay since 2004, and in 2009 embarked on a part-time Foundation Degree in Ceramics at Newcastle College, graduating with distinction, in 2013. Penny has now swapped the corporate suit for a clay-covered apron, and works full-time from her studio at home. She describes her work as playful, tactile, ceramic objects. Some perform a function, some just tell a story. She says her new range of seaside-inspired boxes harks back to many happy hours beachcombing for sand-washed items; porcelain containers carry pictures reminiscent of childhood books and drawings; textural sculptures recall and reflect the joys and woes of learning something new; squishy decorated pillow forms reference quilt making, and rummaging for fabric remnants. Come along to Jesmond Dene Market (next to visitor centre shop) on Sat Aug 9 10am - 3.30pm to say hello to Penny and see more of her work.
