MEET THE SQUAD #17 ORMOND The Rolls Royce of the group. The most naturally-gifted of all of us and, without question, the best player I ever had the privilege of running onto a field with. Its the North West 200 this week on the Causeway Coast - Im heading across in a few hours - when we get to see Superbikes accelerate from 0 to 100mph in the blink of an eye. 25 years ago, Christy (not Christie) was the Ulster schoolboys rugby equivalent. His performance in our first game against Hikawa HS demonstrated this to a national Japanese television audience. And that was not all they saw of him. The arrival of our team bus in Kofu was also covered by several TV camera crews, one of which followed Christy and Frankie back to their home for the evening and their first taste of Japanese food. Wed all had to take lessons in basic Japanese before leaving Coleraine. (Some members of the squad even took the time and trouble to learn a few extra words which would not have been taught in the classroom). But, together with his exaggerated hand signals, Christy decided to add a foreign accent to his attempts to get his message across. The problem was, he seemed to forget what country he was in. It wasnt Italy, and it wasnt Spain. So why he tried to talk to his hosts in the persona of a Ballycairn teenager impersonating Gino DCampos Spanish half-brother Manuel remains beyond me. But its all on video tape - and I have a copy. Expect to see some of this on our big night.
