MEETING DEMANDS: YANGON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT UPGRADE --------------------------------------------------- Yangon International Airport is one of the three International airports in Myanmar and is regarded as the major gateway of the country and it will be privatized soon. The Department of Civil Aviation will officially sign a deal with local firm, Pioneer Company this month to upgrade the Airport. General Manager, Yangon International Airport, Win Ko: We will sign 30-year MoU with Pioneer company. According to the contract, they will have to pay 5% of gross revenue in the first 10 years, 10% in 20 years and 15% in 30 years. The project will be finished in 18 months after singing contract. Authorities said the airport will handle more arrival of passengers when the project is finished. General Manager, Yangon International Airport, Win Ko: We target to reach 5.4 million of local and foreign passengers in 2015. The international tourists arrival has increased 23% annually since 2009. Currently, the airport can handle only 2.7 million passengers so that the airport needs to be upgraded. After the project, the airport can accommodate landing of 33 airplanes. Existing building will be upgraded to four storeys.
