MELANCHOLY OF SHRI RAM-- The lotus-eyed Ram appears dejected - TopicsExpress

MELANCHOLY OF SHRI RAM-- The lotus-eyed Ram appears dejected ever since he has come back from his pilgrimage in company with the Brahmanas. He is sorrowful even while sitting in the tree gardens of vines, entertained by flowery breezes, and amidst the looks of maidens playing around him.Whatever thing O king, is good and sweet, elegant and pleasing, to the soul, he looks at them with sorrowful eyes, like one whose eyes are already satisfied with viewing them heaped up in piles (before him). As regards prosperity or adversity, his habitation or any other desirable things, he says of them to be all unreal, and then holds his silence. He cannot be excited to pleasantry nor tempted to taste of pleasures. He attends to no business, but remains in silence.Like a man sold amidst savages, he takes delight in lonely places, in remotest outskirts, in river banks and wild deserts. Seated in the posture of folded legs (Padmásana), he stays with a distracted mind, reclining his cheek on his left palm. Rama would lecture his companions and friends saying:--Do not set your mind to sensual enjoyments which are only pleasing for the time being. He is altogether passive, without any desire or effort, and devoid of a support. He is neither captivated by anything nor freed from worldly thoughts. These are the reasons which afflict us most. Then,Vishwamitra said:--If such is the case,This apathy of Shri Ram is not caused by any (external) accident or (inner) affection. It is I think the development of that superior intellect which rises from the right reasoning of dispassionate men. :) :) :)
