MELBOURNE CUP TRAGEDY The unthinkable happened post race. Caulfield Cup winner and 2014 Melbourne Cup favourite, Admire Rakti, collapsed and died in the hosing bay. A tragic and very sad end to the race for the Japanese connections. Then last night, news that seventh placed Araldo had to be put down after suffering a broken right hind leg. These tragedies dampened the atmosphere after iconic race. International superstar jockey Ryan Moore piloted German horse Protectionist to a 4 length win. A brilliant ride. Congratulations! You’ve got to feel sorry for Red Cadeaux - second for the third time in 4 years and the quirky named “Who Shot the Barman” finishing third. The Emirates Melbourne Cup is truly one of the great sporting occasions on the planet. I was fortunate to be invited as a guest of Brambles. A massive thank you Tom and Robert for the wonderful hospitality in the marquee trackside. A romantic notion would have been for No. 16 “Brambles” to bring home the gold cup, but too tough an examination. It is a day when many dreams and wishes don’t come true. Since 1861 when Archer won the first race, many famous names have been added to the winner’s list. Carbine, Phar Lap, Makybe Diva (3), Might and Power, Jeune, Rogan Josh, Media Puzzle just to name a few. Each one an amazing story and back story. Especially yesterday’s winner Protectionist, but that’s another story.
