MELBOURNE, Jan 8 AAP - A new protest-hearing process will be trialled in Victoria where stewards will only hear evidence from jockeys. Trainers and managing owners of horses involved can attend but they will not be allowed to give evidence. They can seek permission to give evidence once it is heard from jockeys but it will be at the discretion of stewards. Racing Victorias chairman of stewards Terry Bailey said with shortened gaps between races and with advancements in technology it was time to trial a streamlined system. We believe these changes will help reduce the time required to complete protests whilst still affording the parties a fair hearing and without compromising the correct decision being made by stewards, Bailey said in a statement. The trial starts at Cranbourne on Friday night where eight races will be run at 20-minute intervals. It will continue at Flemington on Saturday. AAP TURF csb/wb
