MEM - Dakar 2015 Stage 2 Highlights Sam Sunderland the UK Rider for Red Bull KTM that came out of the gates in roaring fashion to win stage one had a nightmare in stage 2! Getting lost in the dunes has cost Sam as all the other riders have come past and gained time for the overall standings. This is a complicated course and it brings so many challenges to the riders (yeah, cars, quads and trucks are in there too). This was a grueling section that covered a whopping 518km! Sams speed was key but you have to be going in the right direction with that speed. Getting lost cost Sam over 2 HOURS on the rally stage 2. Marc Coma the reigning champion did not get away without issues either on the monster section with a tyre worn out and for the last part he could not exceed 60kmh (Thats my top speed on my best day by the way! Ed). The tyre costs Marc over 12 mins on the course standing to trickle home in 8th position. So it was Honda that came in first mounted by an elated but exhausted Joan Barreda Bort from Spain. This was in 50 degree heat that they ran the 518km dunes ... thats some serious riding and why Dakar has the name of the greatest race on earth. Joan took the stage against team mate Paulo Goncalves by 6 mins to take the overall standings lead. Simon Pavey and Llewellyn Sullivan-Pavey are still in the fight and running in at 80th and 81st on the KTM machines - what a brilliant father and son experience this must be for the duo. Simon is also known as the guy that taught Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman to ride off road in the Long Way series. So when Simon is not running 518km courses in 50 degree heat he can be found in Wales teaching off road skills at offroadskills/.
