MEMO To: Copywriters and On-Air Staff Regarding: White House Coverage DATE: 12/30/14 In order for Fox News to maintain our position as America’s most trusted, reliable and objective news source, it is vital that we adhere to a clear and consistent set of practices. Here is a brief reminder of the guidelines for copywriters and on-air staff to follow when covering the White House: 1. The individual currently occupying the White House must be referred to as “Obama.” NEVER “President Obama.” Obama’s wife must be referred to as “Mrs. Obama” or “Michelle.” NEVER “The First Lady.” 2. Every statement of policy emanating from the White House must be followed immediately by comments of on-air staff and guests explaining the potentially disastrous consequences of said policy. 3. If said policy was once supported— or initiated— by a Republican president (such as encouraging environmental protection legislation, making diplomatic overtures to hostile nations or promoting immigration reform), THIS MUST NEVER BE MENTIONED. 4. Any improvement in the American economy must be described as the result of conservative policies or simply not mentioned. IT MUST NEVER BE ATTRIBUTED TO POLICIES OR ACTIONS OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION. . Again, please note that the above guidelines are not suggestions; compliance is mandatory. Employees who violate them will be subject to disciplinary action, the severity of which will be based on the seriousness of the offense. Feel free to contact me if you have questions.
