MEMORABLE DAYS OF MY YOUTH Std 5, Third Term, Class Teacher; Mr Matuli Kachamba Ngwira, Number 1, Reuben Mhango, Number 2, Lizzie Mayuni, Number 3, Zakhe Nyasulu, Number 4, Jenala Kondowe, Number 5 Mayor Nyasulu and so on and so forth. (This was the youngest combination I can ever remember apart from Reuben Mhango) COME OCTOBER, NEXT CLASS, we met those who did not make it into the next class themselves, very intimidating situation, and someone has the authority to say, pala mukakweranga ma number one, nkhu Std 5 kwenekuko, iyi ndi Std 6 mwabana, what is Agriculture mukuyimanya imwe? First day ends with general cleaning with us doing the donkey work. Comes Mr. Dunduti Mhango, the Class Teacher on the 2nd day, goes straight to the blackboard and writes AGRICULTURE. Having been mocked kuti what is Agriculture mukuyimanya imwe, it looks like Lizzie and I didnt enjoy the mockery and asked our respective family members what it was, but we pretended not to know when the Teacher asked the class the very question that was a mockery point the previous day. Sadly, he pointed, yes you, pointing at Lizzie, hey! Getting it correctly surprised those who were mocking the previous day, had he pointed at me, I would have silenced them too! By the time we got into 3rd Term, it did not surprise me that Number 1, it was Lizzie Mayuni, Number 2, Zakhe Nyasulu, Number 3, Jenala Kondowe; Reuben Mhango had left for Chiweta L.E.A. School. Std 7 was no different in the first days with with mwabana muno tikusambira vya Civilisation, mukuyimanya Roman Civilization imwe, mungachita masewera, mutikumanenge navyo, Kuli vya Renaissance kuno, vya Mesopotamia, Greek Civilization mungavikwaniska yaye imwe, mwachepa kutali. We managed, amongst us Lizzie maintained her 1st position status, position 3 didnt skip me either, Jenala drifted a bit but she did not perform that bad, position 6 or 7 is what she got. The rest is History.I still maintain our combination was the youngest i can ever remember, at that time, Lizzie Mayuni, Jenala Kondowe and two other girls whom i have forgotten but were equally good, tumawere tukaya tundambe and it was a reference point from our Class Teacher, Mr. Mchombo Kondowe, the Headmaster!
